Furiant

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Furiant ( Czech. “The Enthusiastic”, this from Latin furians , “inspiring, maddening”) is a fast Bohemian folk dance , which is characterized by a change of time between 2/4 and 3/4 time , similar to the double . In Czech art music it is usually in three-quarter time with typical hemiolas (accent shifts), as in Bedřich Smetana or Antonín Dvořák . The Furiant is treated for the first time in Daniel Gottlob Türk's piano school from 1789, where it is referred to as " Furie ".

Well-known examples from 19th century art music are the Furiant from Smetana's opera The Bartered Bride , as well as several compositions by Dvořák, including the final movement from the Czech Suite op. 39, two piano pieces op. 42, called "Zwei Furianten" , the first and last movement from the Slavonic Dances op. 46 , the third movement from the 6th symphony in D major with the movement names “ Scherzo , Furiant, Presto ” and the third movement from the piano quintet op. 81. The composer Enjott Schneider also composed one in 1999 "Furiant (for small orchestra)".
