Background information on horse evaluation and breeding can be found under: Exterior , interior and horse breeding .

Exterior

The Furioso is an elegant riding horse of medium size, which occurs predominantly in all brown and black colors . The breed has a good gait disposition and is particularly impressive for its endurance and hardness combined with speed.

interior

The Furiose-North Star is ideal for hunting and eventing and has proven itself well in dressage, jumping and easy pulling. This makes it suitable for the ambitious recreational rider who values a healthy horse that is frugal in terms of feeding and keeping.

Breeding history

The breed originated in the Mezőhegyes stud in the mid-19th century. In this headquarters of the Hungarian half-breed, the stud management tried to meet the need for cavalry horses by mating the existing dam stocks (mare families with Mecklenburg , Trakehner , Transylvanian and Nóniusz descent) with a selection of promising thoroughbred stallions.

In 1841 Furioso senior , one of the two progenitors and international namesake of the breed, was set up in Mezöhegyes. Furioso senior was a brown thoroughbred who was born in Count György Károlyi's stud in 1836. On his father's side he was drawn to the famous Herod-Eclipse connection; his father Privater won numerous races in England and in the k & k monarchy. Furioso's mother Miss Fury also had first class pedigree, her father Whalebone was also from the Eclipse line. The racing successes of the stallion Furioso in Hungary were no surprise given this origin. The breeding potential of the unbeaten stallion should be tested in Mezőhegyes after his racing career in half-blood breeding; he was available to the stud for ten years. His offspring - 95 colts and 81 fillies - stood out in comparison with the offspring of other stallions not only because of their high nobility and correct building, but also because of their considerable physical stability.

The black North Star senior was born in 1844 on the thoroughbred stud of Lord Fitzwilliam in England. His father Jaques - half-brother of the famous Newminster - and his mother Ringlet were both from the Eclipse line. North Star was set up in Mezőhegyes from 1853 to 1861. His offspring (53 colts and 61 fillies) were rather fine, tall and very persistent. Due to their late maturation process, they were particularly happy to be paired with the faster growing, robust Furioso offspring. Despite minor differences, the founders of the line, Furioso and North Star, were quite similar horses. Not only did they have comparable ancestry, they belonged to the same type of English thoroughbred in terms of character, structure and size.

The offspring of the two founder stallions were bred in Mezöhegyes and after a few generations the separation into two strains with two genealogical lines each was made. The systematic rotation of the selected stallions from four lines (Furioso "A", Furioso "B", North Star "A", North Star "B") brought the necessary genetic variability.

One can speak of the breed Furioso-North Star from 1867 at the earliest. In the consolidation phase that followed, the breed was characterized by increasing uniformity in type, color and character traits.

The breed's breeding base is currently very low but appears to be recovering from the low point in the 1980s. Only 500 broodmares and 80 stallions are registered in Hungary. The genetic variability of the breeding animals is sufficient to maintain the breed.
