Fushigi Yuugi Genbu Kaiden ( Japanese ふ し ぎ 遊戯 玄武 開 伝 , fushigi yūgi gembu kaiden ) is a manga series by the Japanese illustrator Yuu Watase and forms the background to her successful series Fushigi Yuugi . It can be assigned to the Shōjo genre.

action

In 1923, the writer Einosuke Okuda discovered an old scroll in China, which he began to translate into Japanese. Okuda tries to save his terminally ill wife Yoshie, whom he left behind in Japan. According to a legend, the scroll is said to have the power to grant its reader wishes. Unfortunately, Yoshie dies before Okuda can finish his job.

Okuda's daughter, 17-year-old Takiko, is not only deeply saddened by the death of her beloved mother, but she also suffers from the unrequited love for Takao Ôsugi, a friend and colleague of her father. When she bursts into her father's study, who, despite the death of his wife, continued to work obsessively on the translation of the “Empire of the Four Gods”, she snatches the book that has just finished from his hand. Believing Okuda loves neither Takiko nor her mother, she is only interested in his work if she wants to tear up the book. But she opens it and is pulled into it. What remains is one of her hairbands, with which Okuda can occasionally make contact with his daughter.

Meanwhile, Takiko finds himself on a snow-covered mountain in the land of Genbu, Hokkan, in the "realm of the four gods" as part of the story. She is promptly attacked by strange beings, from which she saves Rimudo. At first you don't know whether he is a man or a woman, as he can switch between the sexes. As a normal person, he's a man. But if the Chinese character for "woman" appears above his chest, he becomes one (with everything that goes with it) and can use wind magic. As the reader can already guess, Rimudo is one of the seven Genbu-Seishi, namely Uruki, whom Takiko has to gather to call the god Genbu. But this soon leaves them again, so that Takiko runs straight into the arms of a young bounty hunter named Chamuka.

However, the people of Hokkan see the legend of the Genbu no Miko as a bad omen, because the guardian is said to appear at the moment when the country threatens to perish. Chased by assassins sent from Kutou (here too the land of Seiryû takes on the role of opponent of our heroes again) and Rimudo's father, Takiko and Chamuka, alias Tomite, set off to find the other Seishi. In the meantime, Rimudo has joined the army from Kutou not only to flee from his father's assassins, but also to get the chance to kill him. Although he asserts that he has nothing to do with the Genbu no Miko, he is always there to protect Takiko.

style

As with Fushigi Yuugi , the characters are drawn in great detail. Raster foils are often used and the panels are arranged in a varied manner.

Publications

Fushigi Yuugi Genbu Kaiden was published in Japan from 2003 to 2013 in individual chapters, first in the manga magazine Shōjo Comic , then in Fushigi Yūgi Perfect World of the Shogakukan publishing house, partly also in the Monthly Flowers . These individual chapters have also been summarized in twelve edited volumes.

reception

According to the specialist magazine MangasZene , the manga, like its predecessor, lives mainly from the characters, who have even more depth. The manga is also available to readers who have not read Fushigi Yuugi . The AnimaniA describes the manga as “more mature than its predecessor and, due to the bloody scenes, more suitable for older readers.” The coherent plot offers both action and romance and is also accessible to readers who have not read Fushigi Yuugi . Yuu Watase has refined her style and the panels looked “tidier”.

computer game

On June 23, 2005, the Ren'ai adventure Fushigi Yūgi Gembu Kaiden: Kagami no Miko ( ふ し ぎ 遊戯 玄武 開 伝 外 伝 鏡 の 巫女 ) for the PlayStation 2 and the PlayStation Portable was published.
