Yuu Watase ( Japanese 渡 瀬 悠 宇 , Watase Yuu , born March 5, 1970 in Osaka Prefecture , Japan ) is of Japanese nationality and known as Mangaka .

Career

Yuu Watase started drawing comics after entering school. Without much contact with other artists, Yuu initially taught himself everything. In the third grade of high school, Yuu published a first post in a fan magazine, which was followed by another story. The professional debut as a Mangaka (Manga artist) took place in 1989 with Pajama de Ojama . The big breakthrough came in 1992 with Fushigi Yuugi , which was completed in 1996 after 4 years and 18 volumes. The next success was in 1996 Ayashi no Ceres , which like Fushigi Yuugi was filmed into an anime . Yuu drew other works such as Alice 19th or Imadoki! which, however, could not follow on from the huge successes of Fushigi Yuugi and Ayashi no Ceres . In 2003, Yuu resumed work on Fushigi Yuugi , drawing on Fushigi Yuugi Genbu Kaiden .

In 1997, Yuu received the 43rd Shōgakukan Manga Prize in the Shōjo category for Ayashi no Ceres .

In May 2019, Yuu came out as " X-gender ", a non-binary gender identity common in Japan .
