Future Systems was an architecture firm founded in 1979 by Jan Kaplický and David Nixon in London , which existed until Kaplický's death in 2009 and stood out with high-tech and blob architecture .

history

Kaplický and Nixon founded the office while working for Norman Foster at the same time . The initially strongly theoretical orientation of the company was oriented towards practical feasibility with the arrival of Amanda Levete , who was a partner from 1989–2008 (and Kaplický's wife from 1991–2006).

During this time, residential houses such as the Hauer-King House in Islington , London, with its fully glazed front and garden, were built in 1994 , and in 1996 the House in Wales in Druidstone , Pembrokeshire, sunk into a hill .

The breakthrough came with the Media Center at Lord's Cricket Ground in London , for which the company received the Stirling Prize in 1999 . The direct result of this success was the contract to build the Selfridges department store in the Bullring Shopping Center in Birmingham , which was completed in 2003 and can be seen as a prime example of blob architecture.

After winning the competition for the new building of the National Library of the Czech Republic in Prague (2007), a critical, highly politicized discussion sparked, for which the construction in 2008 was put on hold. The construction of the Antonín Dvořák Concert and Congress Center in Ceske Budejovice , designed in 2008, is similarly unsecured , the implementation of which was suspended in 2014 for cost reasons. After Kaplický's death, however, his Museo Casa Enzo Ferrari in Modena, designed in 2007, was realized by his colleague Andrea Morgante until 2012. After Kaplický's unexpected sudden death, Levete's office AL_A became the de facto heir and administrator of Future Systems and, above all, brought the British projects to an end.

Future Systems also started designing fashion stores such as Comme des Garçons as well as designing furniture and the like. Ä. emerge.
