Gáspár Borbás (born July 26, 1884 in Budapest , Austria-Hungary , † October 14, 1976 in Budapest, Hungary ) was a football player who was one of the first star players in Hungarian football and won five championship titles with the Ferencvárosi TC .

Club career

Borbás was one of the founding members of the FTC and scored the first championship goal in the club's history in 1901. He was a quick and strong winger who was used especially on the left wing and was known for his precise crosses, but also made an appearance as a goalscorer himself. He was also one of the best short-distance runners in Hungary at the beginning of the 20th century.

In 1903 he won the first championship title with the Franzstadt team, but switched to local rivals Magyar Athletikai Club the following year . There it was enough for only two runner-up titles in the next few years, but in 1907 Borbás was voted Player of the Year. The striker returned to his home club in 1909, where he spent the most successful period of his career. Together with Imre Schlosser , he formed the left attacking side of the FTC and won as many championship titles as well as one cup victory in four years. Schlosser benefited from the crosses of his strike partner and was also top scorer in each of the four years of championship.

In 1916, Borbás ended his playing career.

National team

After the first international match of the Hungarian association in 1902 went on stage without Borbás, he was placed on the left wing in April 1903 when the national team appeared for the second time. In the game against Bohemia he scored a goal after 16 minutes, which was the first goal in the history of the national team.

In the following years he was a fixture with the Hungarians and was able to establish himself in a storm series with Schlosser and Jenő Károly . Borbás was the first player in his country to hit double digits. In 1912 he took part in the Olympic Games , where the Hungarians continued to play in the consolation round after an opening defeat against England and also won it after a 3-1 against Austria .

His 41st and last international match he played in October 1916 in a 2: 3 against Austria. He scored a total of eleven goals, no less than eight against their arch rivals.

After football

During his active sports career, Borbás had already completed a law degree, which he completed with a doctorate in 1908. He was the first of a number of national players who had a doctorate, such as György Sárosi and Máté Fenyvesi after him . In 1916 he ended his sports career to accept a civil service post. In his second career, Borbás made it to the public prosecutor, but also remained connected to football, for example, when he represented the players' association.
