The goose man fountain is one of the oldest ornamental fountains in the city of Meiningen and was built in 1854. The fountain figure is a copy of the goose man figure from the famous fountain of the same name in Nuremberg , which the ore caster Pankraz Labenwolf made around 1550.

construction

The fountain stands in the middle of a small square, the paving of which is arranged in concentric circles around the fountain. On the base of a round stone slab, an octagonal baptismal font-like sandstone basin sits on a stone column that has been cut several times . In the middle of the basin stands the bronze figure of the goose on an octagonal stone pedestal . It shows a farmer in trousers and boots with two geese under his arms. The water pours into the basin from the beaks of both geese.

The fountain had previously had several locations in the city. Among other things, it was located at the Steinweg / Alte Henneberger Strasse intersection at the southern end of the old town near the Upper Gate until 1991. Since then, it has stood in a small square at the north end of the old town and the beginning of Georgstraße opposite the Hotel Sächsischer Hof at the entrance to the castle park . The listed fountain was restored in early 2014.
