In 1798, the city began building a hostel on the site of a looped bastion directly in front of the lower gate tower . In 1802 the Sächsischer Hof was completed as a domain inn and soon advanced to become the best lodging house in Meiningen. From 1808 to 1825 the Meiningen post office was located in some rooms of the house. The first extension was inaugurated as early as 1826; it was built to the east of the main building and was initially used as a casino . Until 1831, before the first Meiningen court theater was opened, theater performances and concerts were regularly held in the hotel hall. In 1843 the Princes of Thurn and Taxis acquired the Saxon Court and set up a post office again in the southern part of the house. The post office and post office , located in the rear of the building, operated until 1873.

In 1900, renovation and expansion work was carried out, which gave the Saxon court its present-day appearance. Under court building officer Eduard Fritze and master builder Otto Schubert , the client raised the building by two floors. On the upper floors it received half-timbering, decorated balconies, small pointed towers and window frames in Art Nouveau style . In 1950 the HO , a retail company in the GDR , took over the hotel and ran it until it was closed in 1990.

At the beginning of the 1950s, the SED established a district party school in the building for several years, at which Erich Honecker also appeared. During this time, structural changes took place that were intended to eradicate the hotel's urban appearance. This happened to the detriment of the building fabric. During the turn of the century , when the historical significance of the hotel was rediscovered, the HO tried to eliminate these errors through structural reconstruction. This failed because of insufficient finances and a lack of specialist knowledge . The hotel then had to close briefly before it was bought and reopened in 1991 by hotelier Sawade.

After a bankruptcy, restaurateur and hotelier Peter Henzel took over the traditional but structurally dilapidated hotel in 1996. In 1997 he had extensive renovation work carried out, which restored the original condition of the house and thus brought the old splendor of the house and its history back to life. The now successfully managed hotel earned four stars in the hotel classification and now offers regular artistic events. In 2018 Peter Henzel retired and sold the hotel with its restaurants and cafe to the new owner Solewerk Hotel GmbH from Bad Salzungen .
