Guest house friendship
The friendship guest house of the Ministry for National Defense of the GDR was built in the 1960s at Karl-Marx-Damm 79 in Bad Saarow . The entire area of the guest house with the footbridge to the Scharmützelsee took up about 1.5–2 hectares . At the same time, the weekend property for Minister Heinz Hoffmann and his family was built on Karl-Marx-Damm 77. The Bad Saarow Military Medical Academy of the NVA was not far from the facility .
Pre-use
The friendship guest house with its residential facilities, outdoor facilities with a jetty to Scharmützelsee, swimming pool , shooting range and bowling alley was used for the temporary stay of military delegations staying in the GDR, unofficial meetings with politicians and private guests of the minister. In the last few years before the fall of the Wall, deserving members of the NVA often spent their holidays in the house. The minister's secretariat organized the occupancy of the house. The couple in charge of the guest house and their employees were also responsible for looking after Minister Hoffmann's weekend property next door . When the Hoffmann family was present, they had to take over the economic provision, after their departure the cleaning and restoration of order in the property. In the mid-1970s, the Hoffmann family bunker was built in the garden between the two properties. Officially, the protected shelter was supposed to be used for guests staying in the guest house. The buildings and the minister’s weekend property received communications from the main communications center of the Ministry of National Defense .
Post-turn use
With the end of the GDR, the guest house became part of the Federal Property Office and was looked after by the Bad Saarow House and Property Service. The tenders for the sale of the property were unsuccessful for a long time. At the beginning of 2008, the entire area was cleared by a real estate company based in Berlin and the construction of a senior citizens' residential complex on Scharmützelsee began.
