Gérard Paris-Clavel

Gérard Paris-Clavel (born October 2, 1943 in Paris , France ) is a French graphic artist. In 1970 he founded the graphic collective Grapus together with Pierre Bernard and François Miehe .

Life

Paris-Clavel studied at the École des Métiers d'Arts and then came to Warsaw with Pierre Bernard to study with Henryk Tomaszewski . During the student movement of 1968 they took part in the Atélier Populaire des École des Arts Décoratifs, later collaborated with the Institut de l'Environnement. In 1970 Paris-Clavel was one of the founding members of the graphic design collective "Grapus" and in the mid-1970s they were joined by Alexander Jordan and Jean-Paul Bachollet. The collective was dissolved again in 1990. Since then, Paris-Clavel has been working as an independent artist, partly with Vincent Perrotet in the “Ne pas plier” association, where he is involved in political and social areas.

In 1991 the members of Grapus received the “Grand prix national des arts graphiques”.

The association “Ne pas plier” was founded in 1991, the name was originally the title of a magazine that Paris-Clavel had designed during his time at Grapus. He formed a small group called “Cocolux” (the “crazy gang” of Grapus) with artists such as Thomas Hirschhorn and the photographer Marc Pataut . They published several issues of the magazine which were distributed free of charge.
