Gísli Oddsson

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gísli Oddsson (* 1593 ; † July 2, 1638 ) was a Protestant bishop of Skálholt in the south of Iceland .

He served his office from 1632 until the day of his death.

Family and education

His father was Oddur Einarsson , who was also his predecessor in office.

Gísli Oddson attended school in Skálholt. Following Icelandic customs, he then traveled to Copenhagen in 1613 to continue studying there.

In 1616 he became a priest in Skálholt and in 1621 rector of the local school.

In 1629 he was formally appointed personal assistant to his father, after his death provost (governor of the bishopric).

In 1632 the Althing parliament elected him as the new bishop of Skálholt.

In 1622 he married Guðrún Björnsdóttir. The marriage remained childless.

Iceland Book

Like his father, Gísli Oddsson also wrote a treatise in Latin on his fatherland. The work was entitled De mirabilibus Islandiæ ( Eng . About the wonders of Iceland ). In this work the beginning empiricism mixes with the popular (but) belief of the Icelanders of his epoch.
