Günter Harms

Günter Harms (born February 13, 1947 in Ahlen ) is a German politician and former North Rhine-Westphalian state parliament member of the SPD .

Life and work

After attending elementary school , he completed an apprenticeship as an industrial clerk by 1966 . From 1966 to 1968 Harms worked for the Federal Border Police and then in industry until 1970. He graduated in business administration from the University of Applied Sciences in Dortmund . In 1973 and 1974 he worked for a member of the Bundestag. Then he studied at the University of Münster and passed the first and second state exams for teaching at vocational schools. He then taught at a vocational school. From January 2nd, 1996 to September 30th, 1999 he was full-time mayor of the city of Ahlen.

Harms joined the SPD in 1970. He is active in numerous committees of the party, so u. a. as chairman of the city association of Ahlen. From 1963 to 1978 he was a member of IG Metall and since 1978 he has been a member of the Education and Science Union .

From May 30, 1985 to January 2, 1996 Harms was a member of the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia . He was elected directly in constituency 101 Warendorf II. In the twelfth electoral term, he left the NRW state parliament due to his election as the first full-time mayor of the city of Ahlen.

He has been a member of the city council of the city of Ahlen since 1975.
