Günter Josef May

Günter Josef Mai (born October 8, 1923 in Berlin-Schöneberg ; † July 2, 1963 in Gardelegen , Altmark ) was a German Roman Catholic writer .

Life

Günter Josef Mai - about whose years before 1959 nothing is known, except that he suffered a serious war injury that severely impaired his further life - has been writing novels and stories with Catholic influences in the GDR since the late 1950s . His main work, A House Built Against the Night, which was also published as a serial novel in all the district newspapers of the Christian Democratic Union , was positively received by the readership and praised the readable “Guide to Christianity in Action and Real Charity ”. His credo read: “The poet essentially has this in mind: to depict what is really happening on our earth; depict how we humans live; to depict how we must strive to follow our prescribed path in life to the goal that we know before us. But all this is the life given by God on our earth, it is part of the divine creation. Whoever contributes to the understanding of this creation ... like the poet is just like the priest mediator, is called like he ... ” Alexander Alfs illustrated most of his books .

Mai died on July 2, 1963 in his home town of Gardelegen after months of pain in the sanatorium. The estate included the unpublished novels And seek light and power without mercy . He was able to incorporate passages from it into his last book Kleingeld , which, like Temptation of the Free, could only appear after his death.
