Alexander Alfs

Alexander Alfs (born September 25, 1924 in Döbeln ; † May 27, 2010 in Dresden ) was a German graphic artist , painter and illustrator .

life and work

Alexander Alfs completed an apprenticeship as a machine fitter. He then studied from 1948 to 1952 at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts with Erich Fraaß , Hans Theo Richter and Josef Hegenbarth . He then worked freelance and was a member of the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR .

He illustrated 70 books and created 2200 graphics for them. He published illustrations for theater reviews for the daily Union . He designs programs for the Staatstheater Dresden , the Landesbühnen Sachsen and the Herkuleskeule . In 1954 he designed the heads of the characters for the play Der Ochse von Kulm for the Staatliche Puppentheater Dresden (puppet stage) .

Alexander Alfs was head of the drawing and drawing circles of the large graphic company Völkerfreundschaft from 1954 , from 1979 of the club house Pentacon in Dresden and as a mentor of the summer painting days. He taught at the Pedagogical University of Dresden from 1975 to 1979. In 1979/80 he had a teaching position in the field of remedial class evening studies at the Dresden University of Fine Arts.

Works by him are in the Beeskow art archive , in the art collection of the Städtische Galerie Dresden , in the art fund of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden , in the Saxon State Library - State and University Library Dresden (SLUB) Collections department, in the art service of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Saxony in Dresden , in the cathedral treasury of Sankt Petri of the Dresden-Meißen diocese in Bautzen. In the St. Antonius Church in Oppach there is a Way of the Cross with 14 graphics created in 1958.
