The listed building of the small gallery "Hans Nadler" is one of the oldest buildings in the southern Brandenburg town of Elsterwerda in the Elbe-Elster district . Exhibitions by regional artists and other cultural events take place here. A permanent exhibition on the upper floor of the half-timbered house pays tribute to the work of the painter Hans Nadler, who was born in Elsterwerda in 1879, and highlights his close relationship with the city of Elsterwerda.

history

The historic arcade house of the small gallery "Hans Nadler" was built in 1720/25 on the northern section of today's main street as a typical arable house. In this area, not far from the so-called Luckische or Wendish Gate , the northern border of the city was at that time.

The master plumber Gustav Wilhelm used the square-shaped property in Hauptstrasse 29 from 1886 and built a large residential and commercial building on the property directly on Hauptstrasse in 1890, in which household and kitchen appliances were traded. The smaller half-timbered house served as a moving house, warehouse and locksmith's shop. The property on Rathausstrasse was closed off by a high wall in which there was a gate.

On May 8, 1945, the residential and commercial building was completely destroyed by fire and then leveled. The later owner, master plumber, Kurt Horn, who had been working in the company since 1921, continued his business in the preserved half-timbered house until the end of 1966 and handed it over to his son Werner Horn. He used the house until 1976. The city of Elsterwerda had already become a co-owner of the property in 1971 and it was decided in 1978/79 to completely clear the old property. Some Elsterwerda citizens, among them Georg Kuhlins, Eberhard Matthes , Gustav Bekker, Walter Huke and the monument conservator Hans Nadler , son of the painter Hans Nadler , actively campaigned for the preservation and restoration of the historic building. Therefore it was decided to preserve measures of the building. From 1978 onwards, the outer facade was repaired and the lower rooms were repaired until 1980. On April 15, 1980 the opening of the small gallery took place and the building was handed over to the local branch of the Kulturbund of the GDR . The celebratory naming of the small gallery “Hans Nadler” took place on May 22, 1982. The laudation on this occasion was given by Joachim Uhlitzsch , then director of the Neue Meister gallery in Dresden .

After 1990 the sponsorship of the gallery was transferred to the city and it has been in the hands of the Heimatverein Elsterwerda und Umgebung e. V. The entire building was renovated in 2007.

Exhibitions

Permanent exhibition in the upper rooms

The gallery and the exhibitions are organized by a voluntary gallery advisory board.

The gallery hosts exhibitions by regional artists and other cultural events, such as auditions at the Elsterwerda Music School or book readings. A permanent exhibition on the upper floor of the half-timbered house pays tribute to the work of the painter Hans Nadler, who was born in Elsterwerda on January 14, 1879, and highlights his close relationship with the city of Elsterwerda. Loans from the Nadler family offer a glimpse into the work of the painter, who is primarily known in the region as a painter .

Eulenspiegelbrunnen

Eulenspiegelbrunnen

The Eulenspiegelbrunnen is located directly in front of the gallery and was created by the local artist Hans Eickworth (1930–1995). The handover of the fountain took place on the same day as the inauguration of the gallery.

According to his own statement, the artist wanted to make visible the Eulenspiegeleien of daily life, from which no one is always protected.

anecdote

The erection of the fountain by the city brigade, which took place in the absence of the artist, was itself an owl. It happened that the fountain was set up rotated by 180 °. The well was already set in concrete and the water connections laid when Eickworth noticed the mistake. Without further ado, the artist sawed off the head with a hacksaw and fixed it, also turned by 180 °, with an ordinary glue. It went like wildfire through the city when the fountain stood without a head the next morning and a feverish search for it began. The head, which had simply fallen off, was finally found in the edge of the well and was reattached with a steel bolt and metal glue. Eulenspiegel had turned his head now, but he was looking at the city and the sun as the artist had intended.
