Eberhard Matthes

Paul Wilhelm Eberhard Matthes (born January 7, 1915 in Lipsa ; † November 16, 1998 ) was a German teacher , local history researcher and monument conservator . In 1995 he was made an honorary citizen of the southern Brandenburg city ​​of Elsterwerda .

Matthes was born in 1915 as the youngest of five children of the landlord Erich Matthes and his wife Hedwig in Lipsa in what is now the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district. From 1921 he first attended school in neighboring Lindenau and later switched to the Elsterwerda secondary school . On March 23, he began his training as a soldier in Löbau, Saxony . In the course of the Second World War , Matthes was taken prisoner by the Americans on August 6, 1944 and later with stays in the Sachsenhausen special camp and in the Soviet Union in Russian custody, from which he was released in early 1949. After lengthy medical treatment, he initially trained as a career counselor at home, which was followed by training as a teacher for German language and literature from January 1, 1950 to July 21, 1954. In this profession he worked at schools in Gröditz and Elsterwerda until 1966. In 1980, Matthes became the honorary director of the newly created small gallery "Hans Nadler" in Elsterwerda, after having fought for years as a monument conservationist to preserve the listed half-timbered house. Eberhard Matthes remained in this position until 1987. In 1986 he became the city archivist and local chronicle.

Because of his services to the city of Elsterwerda, Matthes was granted honorary citizenship in January 1995.
