The school as a teacher training college

As a result of the regulations of the Congress of Vienna in 1815, the city and castle of Elsterwerda, which until then had been under the administration of the Saxon electors and served as the summer residence of Duke Karl von Kurland until his death in 1796, came from the Kingdom of Saxony to the administrative district of Merseburg of the Prussian province Saxony .

On October 24, 1851, the Prussian Provincial School Board applied to the Ministry of Culture to set up a seminar in Elsterwerda Castle. The approval was given on April 6, 1852, but the building permit was not granted until 1856. In the autumn of 1857, the renovation work was completed and on January 6, 1858, it was handed over to the seminar administration. On November 13, 1857, the Royal Prussian Teachers' Seminar was opened with 19 pupils. Since the newly created educational establishment was planned for significantly more seminarians, further recordings soon followed and in autumn 1859 the targeted number of 60 seminarians was finally reached. In 1878 the construction of a seminar gymnasium, which had now become necessary, began on the school premises, which was to become the masterpiece of the Elsterwerda master builder Friedrich Jage , who subsequently erected a large number of other buildings in the city of Elsterwerda and its surroundings. In addition, in the summer of 1882, a newly built seminar training school was put into operation, in which there was a classroom, a teaching room for chemistry and physics and a chemical laboratory. In the same year the number of seminarians studying in Elsterwerda, after an increase to 65 in 1879, was increased again to 75 pupils.

In order to prepare the seminar candidates for the six-year teacher training course, they needed their own preparation facility in Elsterwerda, which was finally put into operation in 1898 in the nearby Elsterstrasse and made the seminar a model institute of its time. Friedrich Jage was also the master builder here. In 1901 the number of students increased again to 90. Since the premises of the boarding school were no longer sufficient, they made do with three boarders, which were rented in the city area and offered space for 35 seminarians. The boarding school was later completely closed and the rooms that became free could be used for school operations.

The First World War , which began in 1914 , also had consequences for the Elsterwerda teachers' seminar. Numerous seminarians were called up for military service and many fell victim to it. As a result, emergency and individual examinations were carried out at the seminar and after the end of the war the number of students here increased again due to war seminarists who were transferred to Elsterwerda. But after the November Revolution, the Abitur was required for training as a primary school teacher , which meant that the previous teacher seminars soon ceased and were replaced by teacher training colleges .

From the Weimar Republic to the reunification of the two German states

Entrance portal at the castle

In 1926 the Elsterwerda teacher training college was withdrawn and its place was taken by the upper secondary school "Elsterschloss", a state advanced school which had been in operation here since 1922 and was supposed to lead talented elementary school students to university entrance after six years. The first Abitur exam was taken by five students in Elsterwerda in 1928 and the educational institution was soon considered to be the largest advanced school in the province of Saxony . In 1930 163 pupils attended the Elsterschloss School.

In 1938 the school was converted into a high school . The previous director Dr. Mayerowicz was suspended because of his Jewish descent and Oberstudienirektor Ernst Lampe , who was already in charge of the secondary school, was reinstated as director. After the end of the Second World War , only two of the old teachers remained in service, among them Ernst Lampe, who continued to run the school, but resigned from office in December 1945 due to a serious illness of his wife. Dr. Mayerowicz, who survived the Shoah , took over the management of the school again on January 1, 1946.

In 1959, the Elsterschloss School was converted into an extended secondary school (EOS). While the neighboring Polytechnic Oberschule (POS) received the name of the resistance fighter Rudi Arndt , in May 1969, in the presence of his widow Valentina, the Elsterschloss School was named EOS “ Vladimir Komarow ”; a Soviet cosmonaut who became the first person to die on a space mission in 1967. A memorial stone was also unveiled in his honor on the school grounds.

The reunification of the two German states in 1990 meant that the previous EOS was converted into a grammar school and the school has had its current name "Elsterschloss-Gymnasium" since the school year 1991/92. With the introduction of the upper level of the gymnasium, the duration of the training for the students increased to 13 years, which led to the EOS Abitur being completed for the last time in Elsterwerda in 1993 and no school-leaving exams to take place in 1994. A year later, the classroom management given by class teachers in the top vintages, whose duties since the tutors of the existing at the school advanced courses take.

The increasing number of pupils led to an increased need for space, which could be covered by the closure of the immediately adjacent polytechnic high school "Rudi Arndt", since most of its premises could be taken over by the grammar school.

From 1995 the entire school complex was extensively renovated. The prefabricated building of the former POS, which is adjacent to the castle, was completely gutted and the castle closed to school operations. In order to keep the school going nonetheless, a mobile school was built as a temporary solution for the duration of the construction work on the school premises and other rooms in the city area were used. After the first construction phase could be handed over at the beginning of the 1998/99 school year, the palace was completed in August 1999. On September 4, 1998, the newly built "Elbe-Elster-Halle" was also handed over in the immediate vicinity. In addition to sporting activities, this multi-purpose hall can also be used for cultural events such as concerts, theater performances and exhibitions. It also has outdoor sports facilities, which can also be used by the Elsterschloss-Gymnasium.

With the closure of the neighboring “ Grundschule am Schlossplatz” in 2006, additional rooms became available, which are now used by the grammar school after extensive renovation.
