Günther Hillmann (sociologist)

Günther Hillmann (* 1922 in Breslau ) is a German philosopher and sociologist .

Life

Günther Hillmann was born in Breslau in 1922. During his school days he was active in the NS youth organization . After graduating from high school in 1940, he was drafted into the Wehrmacht and wounded on the Eastern Front . After the war he began studying philosophy , pedagogy and sociology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . From 1950 to 1956 he interrupted his studies to get involved as a functionary in various organizations of the KPD . From 1957 to 1960 he worked as a milling cutter in a large company in Munich. He resumed his studies in 1960 and in the same year was charged with his previous political activities and sentenced to 15 months in prison. In 1963 he received his doctorate under Ernesto Grassi with a thesis on the relationship between Marx's early writings and Hegel's philosophy. A year later he had to serve six months of his prison sentence, despite violent protests from his doctoral supervisor and other scientists. As a freelance journalist in Munich, he dealt with questions about the development of Marxism and industrial sociological topics. He was the editor of a three-volume Marx edition in the series "Rowohlt's Classics" and the series "Texts of Socialism and Anarchism 1800–1950", also published by Rowohlt Verlag .
