Gurkan Balkans

Gürkan Balkan (born May 28, 1980 in Istanbul ) is a Turkish guitarist, oud player, composer and producer.

Gürkan Balkan began playing the short-necked lute oud at the age of seven and received private lessons from the age of nine. At the age of eleven he began his education at the Istanbul Conservatory. There he studied guitar and oud with Erol Sayan and theory of classical music with Varol Atalay.

In 1998 he moved to the Technical University of Istanbul , where he majored in composition and minor subjects in classical piano and oud. In addition to his studies, Balkan also gained stage experience in the field of Turkish popular and folk music, with Gece Yulguları and Sunset, among others. He completed his studies in 2002.

In the same year he moved to Esslingen am Neckar . Here he played in the Baden-Württemberg State Youth Orchestra , from 2004 to 2008 also as a soloist. The clarinetist Giora Feidman became aware of him and engaged him for concerts and CD productions. Feidman's regular cast also includes percussionist Murat Coşkun , with whom he immediately got along musically. In 2006 Coşkun and Balkan revived the Oriental Jazz Trio Ensemble FisFüz with Annette Maye .

During his time in Germany, he worked as a producer and studio musician in Turkish popular music productions, including Erkan Cinar, Şahin Uçar, Nazim Nas and Yusuf Budak. In 2008 the award-winning FisFüz CD Yakamo was released.
