João Câncio Freitas

João Câncio Freitas is a politician from East Timor . Although he does not belong to any party, he is considered to be close to the Partido Democrático (PD) .

Career

During the Indonesian occupation, Freitas lived in East Timor and Indonesia , but studied in Australia . After the occupation he took care of Australia's teacher exchange program in East Timor. In 2002, Freitas became rector of the newly established Dili Institute of Technology (DIT). When it closed during the 2006 riots in East Timor , Freitas resigned from DIT. From August 2007 he was Minister for Education and Culture in the Gusmãos cabinet , succeeding Rosária Corte-Real . On August 8, 2012, Bendito Freitas replaced him as minister.

On February 25, 2013, the CAC Anti-Corruption Commission applied for house arrest for João Câncio Freitas. He was accused of abuse of office and economic involvement in the emerging education broadcaster Televisão Educação Timor , of which neither his ministry nor the finance ministry were informed.

On July 21, 2015, the district court sentenced Dili Câncio to seven years' imprisonment and payment of $ 500,000 in compensation to the state. He also has to pay the court costs of US $ 100.
