The State Youth Orchestra of Baden-Württemberg ( LJO BW ) is a symphony orchestra founded in 1972 to promote young musical talent in Baden-Württemberg . It is considered to be one of the most important measures for top-class musical support at the state level and is one of the most renowned youth orchestras in Germany. The members qualify by successfully completing an audition . The orchestra is run by the Baden-Württemberg State Association of Music Schools.

The State Youth Orchestra of Baden-Württemberg was founded in 1972 by Klaus Matakas and Dietmar Mantel. From its beginnings as an extended music school symphony orchestra of the Lahr Municipal Music School, the State Youth Orchestra has quickly developed into one of the most renowned German youth orchestras, which need not fear comparison with many professional orchestras.

Christoph Wyneken was the permanent artistic director of the orchestra until 2014 . Since 2014 the orchestra has been working with renowned alternating guest conductors who provide young musicians aged 13 to 20 with a variety of artistic impulses. Johannes Klumpp has been the orchestra's artistic advisor since 2014 . Guest conductors include Nicolás Pasquet , David Afkham , Hermann Bäumer , Hannes Krämer, Johannes Klumpp and Christoph Altstaedt at the podium of the orchestra. Soloists such as Simon Höfele, Felix Klieser , Kersten McCall, Tabea Zimmermann , Reinhold Friedrich , Boris Faust, Benedict Kloeckner and Franziska Hölscher have already toured with the orchestra.

Admission to the Baden-Württemberg State Youth Orchestra takes place via an audition. After passing the audition, the talented young musicians are given the opportunity to work with well-known conductors, soloists and lecturers during the work phases that take place twice a year and to present the musical results to a wide audience on extensive concert tours. During the work phases, the orchestra works on challenging works of classical, romantic and modern orchestral literature.

Pate Orchestra of the State Youth Orchestra of Baden-Wuerttemberg since 2005 as part of the joint initiative "tutti per" the German Orchestra Association , the Jeunesses Musicales Germany and the Association of German Music Schools , the State Orchestra Stuttgart . The concerts are regularly recorded by the SWR . Numerous CD recordings document the work of the orchestra.

Well-known former members of the state youth orchestra include Reinhold Friedrich and Tabea Zimmermann.

Financing is provided by the state of Baden-Württemberg, the Sparkassenverband Baden-Württemberg as well as concert income and participation fees. In addition, the orchestra is supported by the Friends' Association and the Foundation for the Promotion of the State Youth Orchestra of Baden-Württemberg.
