As Güterweg are in Austria , the opening up of individual rural small settlements or individual buildings designated paths or roads allow vehicles through. These roads can be publicly owned or privately owned. However, they are not part of the public roads and use is mostly reserved for certain groups of people. In 2009 it was around 43,000 km across Austria.

The legal regulations fall within the competence of the federal states . Since these are roads and paths in agriculture and forestry, these administrative agendas can also be carried out by the respective agricultural authorities. The legal basis can also differ depending on the federal state. The freight route is regulated in state laws (e.g. Goods Ropeway Act or Goods and Ropeway Act ). Most of the paths are paved today, but are usually only about three meters wide. When it comes to the substructure, however, high payloads must also be taken into account, since the agricultural machines can also have higher weights.

Management of freight routes

In most cases, the freight routes are managed by freight road communities , which can consist of both legal and natural persons. The contracts regulate exactly how the cost allocation for maintenance and upkeep has to take place. In many cases, these communities can also be supported by the public sector, usually the responsible state government, in the construction of freight roads. While there are numerous small communities in some federal states, there have been only six road maintenance associations in Upper Austria since 1927 , which look after all goods routes in the state.
