Gōda Kiyoshi ( Japanese 合 田 清 , actually Tajima Kiyoshi (田島 清); born May 7, 1862 in Edo ; died May 6, 1938 ) was a Japanese woodcut artist during the Taishō and early Shōwa period .

life and work

Gōda Kiyoshi was born in Edo (now Tokyo) in the Akasaka district. In 1880 he went to Paris to study agriculture. There he met Kuroda Seiki , Kume Keiichirō and Yamamoto Hōsui , who encouraged him to study wood engraving , a variant of the woodcut. His teacher was Charles Barbant (1844-1922). In 1885 he was able to exhibit in the salon of the French artists' association.

In July 1887, Gōda returned to Japan, where he and Yamamoto founded a studio called Seikôkan (生 巧 館) to introduce his technique in Japan. He made prints based on templates from Yamamoto, made illustrations for school books, newspapers and magazines. In 1889 he took part in the founding of the artists 'association "Meiji bijutsu kai" (明治 美術 会), and in 1896 he was one of the founders of the Hakubakai artists' association (白馬) with Kuroda and others. From 1896 taught French at the Department of Western Painting ( Yōga ) at the Tōkyō bijutsu gakkō (東京 美術 学校), the forerunner of the Geidai . In 1900 Gōda took part in the World Exhibition in Paris as a member of the Japanese event committee. He made woodcuts from two of the sketches made by Kuroda during the Russo-Japanese War . He exhibited in 1907 at the first state exhibitions organized by the Ministry of Culture, the "Mombushō bijutsu tenrankai" (文部省 美術展 覧 会).

Gōda was an important representative of the first generation of "Western painters" and graphic artists in the Western style. His works show considerable influence from the Barbizon School . Today he is best known for his wood engraving.
