Gōzō Yoshimasu

Gōzō Yoshimasu ( Japanese 吉 増 剛 造 , Yoshimasu Gōzō ; born February 22, 1939 in Suginami , Tokyo Prefecture ) is a Japanese poet.

Yoshimasu studied at the Keiō University . From 1970 to 1971 he was a visiting author at the University of Iowa as part of the Fulbright program . 1979–81 he was poet-in-residence at Oakland University , and since 1984 he has taught at the Tama School of Art .

He became known as an author and reciter of avant-garde poetry. In 1971 he was awarded the Takami Jun Prize for Ōgon shihen ( 黄金 詩篇 ). In 1979 he received the Rekitei Prize , and in 1984 the Hanatsubaki Prize for modern poetry . He received the Mainichi Culture Prize in 2008 for Omote-gami ( 表 紙 ). In 2013 he was honored as a person with special cultural merits . Yoshimasu is a member of the Japanese Writers' Association and the PEN Center Japan .
