The G5 is a loose union of the five most important emerging countries ( China , India , Brazil , Mexico and South Africa ). They form an interface between the Middle East , South America and the European Economic Area (EEA) . The declared goal is improved climate protection .

The designation G5 is based on the group of eight (often referred to as G8 ), the most important industrial nations and Russia . An alternative name is O5 , O as outreach countries . These five states have been taking part in the G8 summits since 2003 and since the German G8 presidency in the course of the G8 summit in Heiligendamm in 2007 they have also been formally linked to the G8 through "institutional roundtables" that take place at regular intervals.

Other conceptualizations

Europe

In the past, the G5 was also used as the forerunner of the G6 (European Union) , the six most populous European countries. However, this use is no longer common today (due to the inclusion of Poland in the group).

BRICS

Alternatively, there is also the group of the BRICS countries , Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
