The journal GAIA - Ecological Perspectives for Science and Society is an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary scientific journal from the Munich publishing house oekom , which deals with backgrounds, analyzes and solutions to environmental and sustainability problems.

The journal goes back to an initiative by scientists from the Department of Environmental Sciences at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich , the Philosophy and Scientific Theory Center at the University of Konstanz and the Institute for Economics and Ecology at the University of St. Gallen . Today the magazine is supported by the ETH Board (CH), the “NaWis-Runde” (Association for Sustainable Science, DE), the “Alliance for Sustainable Universities in Austria”, the Baden-Württemberg Ministry for Science, Research and Art (DE ) and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research BMBF (DE).

GAIA appeared in the first year in the Spektrum Akademischer Verlag , then in the Nomos Verlag and since 2001 in the magazine program of the oekom Verlag . The magazine is published in two languages ​​(German and English). GAIA was included in the ISI databases with the year 14/2005. It is listed in the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE), in the Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) and in Current Contents / Social & Behavioral Science. The magazine's impact factor in 2019 was 1,875.

GAIA pursues the Green Road to Open Access, authors are allowed to make their articles freely accessible on personal websites or in Open Access repositories immediately after publication (no embargo).

Authors retain the copyright, all articles are published under the Creative Commons Attribution license CC BY 4.0 .

In addition, GAIA offers a "GAIA Hybrid Option", with which authors can publish their articles in open access for a fee.

Expert assessment

The articles published in GAIA are selected both on the basis of technical criteria and under the aspect of interdisciplinary relevance and comprehensibility. The contributions are subject to a double-blind expert review as well as a review by a non-specialist counter-reader . The rejection rate of submitted contributions is currently 50 to 60 percent. A scientific editorial staff proofreads all published articles.

target group

The inter- and transdisciplinary journal GAIA is aimed at scientists from all disciplines, at those interested in science in business and administration, in politics, society and the media, and at students.

Masters Student Paper Award

Since 2014, in cooperation with the Selbach Environment Foundation and Dialogik gGmbH, the GAIA Masters Student Paper Award has been presented for outstanding interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary work by young scientists in the field of environmental and sustainability research.
