Gauss is a commercial mathematics and statistics system for programming development and serves mainly the solution of numerical problems in the areas of statistics , econometrics , time series , optimization and 2D - and 3D - visualization . Like Matlab , it is a programming language for calculating complex matrix operations . These operations are facilitated by internal program libraries and more than 400 implemented functions. Similarly, C - and Fortran - program code to be imported.

The first version appeared in 1984. The program was originally developed for MS-DOS , but was then also made available for GNU / Linux, Sun SPARC and Windows.
