The Grupo Desportivo Fabril do Barreiro is a sports club founded on January 27, 1937 from Barreiro , a town with almost 80,000 inhabitants on the Sétubal peninsula south of the Portuguese capital Lisbon .
history
After the association briefly called itself Grupo Desportivo da Quimigal , it adopted its current name in 2000. As Grupo Desportivo da Companhia União Fabril de Barreiro , better known for short as CUF Barreiro , the club's football team played 22 seasons in the first division of Portugal between 1954 and 1976.
The club was founded in 1937 as a company sports association of the Companhia União Fabril chemical factory, which dates back to 1865 . The club achieved its first major success when in 1939 the cyclist Joaquim Fernandes won the Volta a Portugal , the Tour of Portugal.
The football team, which had participated in national games since 1941, rose to the first division in 1954. The greatest success was the third place in 1965, which entitled to participate in the trade fair cup 1965/66 . There the opponent in the first round was AC Milan from Italy. After results of 2-0 and 0-2, the Cufistas , as they were often called, had to admit defeat 0-1 in a play-off game.
1967/68 in the same competition took place in the first round relatively soundless with two defeats against the Yugoslav club FK Vojvodina Novi Sad . In the UEFA Cup , CUF moved into the second round in the 1972/73 season via Racing White Daring Molenbeek from Belgium. Despite a 1-0 defeat in the second leg at 1. FC Kaiserslautern , the team was eliminated from international football due to a 3-1 defeat in the first leg at home.
In 1976, CUF was relegated last from the first division. Since then, the CUF footballers have sunk into the lowlands of the Portuguese league system and are now playing in the league of the Associação de Futebol de Setúbal .
