The GKK Al Fadhili is the first direct current back -to-back link (GKK) located in Saudi Arabia in the town of Al Fadhili , which serves to connect the power grids within the framework of the Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority (GCCIA) between Saudi Arabia, Bahrain , Kuwait , United Arab Emirates and in future to connect Oman to enable the exchange of electrical energy . A direct amalgamation of the three-phase alternating current power grids of the individual countries is technically not possible, as the largest power grid in Saudi Arabia is operated with a grid frequency of 60 Hz, while the other Gulf countries operate their networks with 50 Hz.

Technical specifications

The GKK plant has a maximum output of 1,800 MW and is divided into three individual converter halls with a converter output of  600 MW each. It is connected to the Saudi power grid with 380 kV / 60 Hz and to the other countries with 400 kV / 50 Hz. The system is equipped with thyristors with a maximum reverse voltage of 8.5 kV and was built in 2008 by Areva in Put into operation. The necessary cooling is a challenge , as the ambient temperature can reach up to 55 ° C and cooling water from the area is not directly available.
