GNU TeXmacs is a free scientific word processor and typesetting program of the GNU project. Some ideas come from TeX and GNU Emacs .

The program author is Joris van der Hoeven .

Range of functions

The program generates structured documents via a WYSIWYG - user interface . Users can create new document templates. Different content such as text, graphics, diagrams etc. from different backends can be combined. TeXmacs uses high quality text and math typesetting algorithms and TeX fonts to create documents and presentations that meet professional requirements.

A text editor component with the support of formula sets , a small picture editor and a presentation tool are also available. Particularly noteworthy is the possibility of using TeXmacs as a user interface for external programs e.g. B. to use computer algebra , numerics , statistics , to plot functions .

The program can be adapted using extensions written in Guile / Scheme .

From version 1.0.7.12 the graphical user interface is based on the Qt toolkit.

In addition to the native TeXmacs format, documents can be saved as XML or Scheme format and exported as PostScript or PDF files . There are converters for generating TeX / LaTeX and HTML / MathML .
