Yacas is a versatile computer algebra system (CAS). The name is an acronym for Yet Another Computer Algebra System . Yacas is free software and as such is published under the GPL .
The first version of Yacas was created in 2000. Yacas can be used offline and there is an explanatory video.
Yacas supplies a system for the symbolic calculation of expressions and has its own programming language in which new algorithms can be developed, but also existing ones can be used. ASCII or OpenMath can be selected as input and output , there are also commands for exporting to LaTeX . Gnuplot is used to graphically display functions, both in 2D and 3D .
Features and commands (selection)
Yacas can:
- can be used as a simple calculator
- Rearrange equations : solve (equation, x)
- differentiate : D (function, x)
- integrate : Integrate (function, x)
- Polynomial factoring: Factor (polynomial)
- Draw graphs of functions (2D and 3D).
- Yacas is programmable
Yacas shares many commands with other programs, including: a. with Mathematica , Maple , Xcas and the TI-89 , TI-92 , Voyage 200 and TI-NSpire calculators .
Operating systems
Both Yacas and Gnuplot are available for different operating systems:
They are available on the homepage together with detailed documentation, where you can also try out the system online.
Although the software cannot keep up with commercial computer algebra systems, it would give a good insight into how these systems work, according to Harald Bögeholz in the “Topic Special: Scientific Software” of the computer magazine c't .
