GS Consolat

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Groupe sportif Consolat ( GS Consolat for short ; alternatively Consolat Marseille ) is a football club from the city of Marseille in the south of France . The club, which played its home games in the Stade de la Martine in the 15th arrondissement of Marseille , with a capacity of 1990 , rose to the third division for the first time in 2014 . In 2018 the club renamed itself Athlético Marseille .

history

The association was founded in 1964 shortly after the eponymous district of Consolat emerged. In the first phase of its existence, the team of the club kicked in the lower leagues and could hardly attract attention from a sporting point of view. In 1983 he only hit the headlines because there was a shootout in his environment. In the same year, the then 23-year-old unemployed Jean-Luc Mingallon took over the management of the association, which was extremely close to bankruptcy with a cash balance of 5.75 French francs . Mingallon remained in office for decades, achieved numerous restructuring and under his aegis, the sporting heights began over time.

In 1999 he was promoted to the sixth class Division d'Honneur . This completed the team at the end of the 2005/06 season in first place and then rose to the fifth division CFA2 . In 2011, the next big step was reached with the qualification for the fourth highest division CFA, which is divided into four groups nationwide. Consolat also gained a foothold at this level right away, with the first relegated being held at a distance of six points in 2012.

During the 2012/13 season, the GS Consolat reached the finals of the French cup competition for the first time in its history. In the round of the last 64 teams, the eleven met fourth-class AS Moulins , had to accept the 1-1 equalizer just before the end of the game and were eliminated due to a defeat on penalties.

For the 2013/14 season, given a budget of 300,000 euros, with which one was among the bottom of the league, the goal was to stay in class. Under the leadership of coach Léon Galli, the team was able to surprise, sat at the top of the table and in the end, as the winners of their regional group, were eligible for promotion to the third division across France. Afterwards, William Prunier, a former French national player with third division experience, was appointed as the new coach. In 2016, after temporarily leading the table, a promotion to the second division was possible until the last match day, but was missed with one point behind SC Amiens . Two years later, GS Consolat rose instead to the fourth division and renamed itself Athlético Marseille. For the 2019/20 season, the club's first team was even forcibly transferred to the fifth-class National 3 .

Image and local importance

With the promotion to the third highest division in 2014 Consolat consolidated its role as number two in the city behind the internationally renowned neighbor Olympique Marseille . In contrast to Olympique in particular, Consolat regards itself as the “club of the poor”, which is mainly due to the situation in the socially disadvantaged northern part of the city.

The district of Consolat has around 2500 inhabitants and, like the surrounding areas, suffers from extremely high youth unemployment and a high crime rate. The football club, on the other hand, has a positive public image through its sporting success, which is why the Liberation newspaper called it the "ambassador for the northern district [of Marseille]".
