Ahmed Gaïd Salah ( Arabic أحمد قايد صالح, DMG Aḥmad Qāyid Ṣāliḥ ; * January 13, 1940 in Ain Yagout ; † December 23, 2019 in Algiers ) was an Algerian politician and military man. Most recently he was General and Chief of Staff of the Algerian Army and Deputy Minister of Defense.

Gaïd Salah served in the Algerian Army from the 1950s, was promoted to general in 1993 and appointed chief of staff in 2004. On September 15, 2013, he took up the post of Deputy Minister of Defense. He was married and the father of seven children.

On March 26, 2019, after violent popular protests, Gaïd Salah became the first government politician to speak out against President Abd al-Aziz Bouteflika, who has been in office for 20 years . He called on the Constitutional Court of Algeria and Parliament to use Article 102 of the Constitution, according to which a president can be declared incapacitated for health reasons and removed. When Bouteflika's government reshuffle at the end of March 2019, Gaïd Salah retained his post as Deputy Minister of Defense. After Bouteflika's resignation in April 2019, he was considered a strong man in Algerian politics. He died of a heart attack on December 23, 2019 . Said Chengriha was called to succeed him on the same day .
