Ga-Rei - Monsters in Chains ( Japanese 喰 霊 , Garei , Eng. "Geistfresser") is a manga series by the Japanese artist Hajime Segawa , which appeared in Japan from 2005 to 2010. The work is in the genres Action , Comedy , Mystery and Shonen classified and has been called Anime implemented television series.

The high school student Kensuke Nimura ( 弐 村 剣 輔 ) has the ability to see ghosts and demons. Although this is often a hindrance, Kensuke has got used to it over time. Now, however, he meets the girl Kagura Tsuchimiya ( 土 宮 神, ), who has the same skills as he and fights demons and ghosts as a special agent. On her mission, Kagura is supported by Ga-Rei, an Inugami that she keeps as a pet. Kagura is transferred to Kensuke's class and soon the two fall in love while Kensuke fights at Kagura's side.

The chapters of the manga first appeared from October 2005 to January 2010 in the manga magazine Shōnen Ace published by Kadokawa Shoten in Japan. The series was later published in twelve edited volumes . The volumes sold over 70,000 times each.

From September 2011 to January 2013, Tokyopop published a German translation of the manga in six double volumes as well as a special volume with further information on the series. Pika Édition brought out a French version, and JBC published the manga in Portuguese.

Anime adaptation

Based on the manga, the studios AIC Spirits and Asread produced an anime television series called Ga-Rei Zero in 2008 . It takes place before the events in the manga and explains the background to Kagura and Yomi, which are only briefly hinted at in the manga. For this reason, the main character of the manga, Kensuke, only appears briefly in the last episode in order to recreate the direct connection to the manga. It was directed by Ei Aoki , the character design designed Osamu Horiuchi and artistic director Yoshimi Umino held. The first broadcast of the twelve episodes began on October 5, 2008, Chiba TV and TV Saitama , a few days later the broadcasting began on the channels AT-X , KBS Kyoto, Sun TV, Tokyo MX TV, TV Aichi, TV Hokkaido, TV Kanagawa and TVQ Kyushu. The last episode was shown on December 21, 2008. The anime has been translated into English and Chinese.

The soundtrack for the series was composed by Noriyasu Agematsu. The opening credits are backed by the song Paradise Lost by Minori Chihara, the closing title is Yume no Ashioto ga Kikoeru by Kaoru Mizuhara. In two episodes the song from the opening credits was also used for the credits.
