Fork man
The Gabelmann-Brunnen (Franconian: Goblmoo ) is a baroque fountain depicting the Roman sea god Neptune in Bamberg's old town.
The Bamberg vernacular calls the Neptune figure "fork man" because of its trident . The square below the fountain is a popular meeting point in Bamberg's pedestrian zone.
history
Ludwig Krug, councilor in Bamberg, moved to Nuremberg in the first quarter of the 16th century , where he also died. In a will he bequeathed 800 guilders to his hometown for the construction of a well. After the city of Nuremberg refused to pay out the money, this amount - hidden in a salt disk - was brought to Bamberg by the Krug testaments.
However, it was not until 1566 that the Bamberg City Council realized the last will of its former member and had a fountain built by Master Jorg Walbergk von Dressen, then a citizen of Kulmbach .
Literary precipitation
Gabelmann was also the name of an alternative newspaper in the 1980s that received the Theodor Heuss Prize for its committed journalism .
The Bamberg dialect poet Hans Morper mentioned the fork man in several poems, such as this one:
Hey, that's Gobl-Mo!
Outside is a grille dro.
Inna drinna, from four tubes.
tonn them a little water carrots;
if it glistens in the Sunna,
then you notice, it is a Brunna!
(Transfer: Hey there is the fork man! There is a grille on the outside. Inside, from four tubes, they squeeze a little water; when it glistens in the sun, then you notice that it is a fountain. )
