Lists on the subject |
The Gabilondo Ruby , usually referred to as the Ruby pistol , was a Spanish handgun .
History and technology
This pistol was made in 1914 as a simplified copy of the Belgian FN Browning model 1903 . The weapon would hardly have been successful if it had not appeared at the beginning of the First World War . German troops had occupied parts of France, causing the country to lose industrial capacity. In this situation, the Gabilondo y Urresti company from Eibar, Spain, won a major order from the French government for the delivery of their pistol. It was then used as a handgun in the French army.
The order far exceeded the company's capabilities. Therefore the production was outsourced to more and more subcontractors. However, the stipulations of the original plans were seldom met. The parts from different factories were often not identical and therefore hardly interchangeable. In extreme cases, this even included the magazines of individual suppliers. In addition, the manufacturing standards were sometimes so miserable that the pistols were definitely a danger for the shooter. For example, a shot could be released as soon as the weapon was loaded. At the end of the war, production was stopped and the remaining stock was soon withdrawn from the French army. However, the weapon remained in use for a long time in the French police and gendarmerie. In some places it will only be replaced today by SIG Pro 2022 .
