Gabriel Baer

Gabriel Baer (born January 13, 1919 in Berlin ; died September 22, 1982 in Jerusalem ) was a German-born, Israeli social historian of the Middle East . By applying social science methods, he pioneered this research area.

Life

Baer was born in Berlin in 1919 and came to Palestine in 1933 . He studied Arabic literature and the history of Islam at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the American University of Beirut . In 1954 he joined the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he was head of the Institute for Research on Asia and Africa for many years . He was chairman of the Israel Oriental Society and edited its magazine, the Hamizrah Hehadash, from volumes 5 to 17. In 1965 he founded the Journal for Asian and African Studies and was its editor from volumes 1 to 14 . He was one of the initiators of the Israeli Academic Center in Cairo . In 1976 he was awarded the Israel Prize in Arabic Linguistics .

Research focus

At the beginning of his research, Baer's focus was on modern Egypt. He later extended his studies to the entire Middle East from modern times to the Middle Ages . Thematically, he dealt with the forms of land ownership , guilds , rural areas and the urban-rural relationship. He has also published on contemporary social phenomena in the Middle East.
