Louis-Gabriel Léopold Charles Amé Bexon also Abbé Bexon (born March 10, 1748 in Remiremont , † February 15, 1784 in Paris ) was a French priest, historian and naturalist and collaborator of Georges-Louis Leclerc de Buffon .

Live and act

Bexon was the lawyer’s son, avocat à la cour Amé Bexon, and his wife Marthe Pillement (* 1722), both married since July 9, 1743. He was sent to the seminary in Toul for further training . He later moved to the University of Besançon , where he studied Catholic theology in 1766 or 1767 . He finished his university education with a doctorate in the theological faculty and then returned to Toul, where he accepted a position as a subdeacon . Bexon spent some time studying canon law and was eventually ordained a priest in 1772 . As a priest he was also confessor and pastor of Princess Anne-Charlotte de Lorraine (1714–1773). After a long stay in Nancy , he became the first cantor grand chantre of the parish of Sainte-Chapelle in Paris.

During his six-month stay in Paris from 1768 to 1769, he tried to get in touch with Buffon, as he had been interested in natural history issues since his youth. Although Buffon's colleague Philippe Guéneau de Montbeillard was in poor health and he was looking for an assistant, his reverence , as in a letter from Buffon to Montbéliard on May 17, 1769, was initially not clear enough for the Abbé Bexon. Bexon didn't meet Buffon until 1772.

He worked on the Histoire naturelle des minéraux by de Buffon. In particular, however, he devoted himself to the Histoire naturelle des oiseaux by de Buffon. Here he also tried to imitate its style. His younger brother was the criminalist Scipion Jérôme François Bexon (1753-1825).
