Gabriel Turville-Petre
Edward Oswald Gabriel Turville-Petre (born March 25, 1908 , † February 17, 1978 ) was an English Scandinavian Medievalist .
He was from 1953 to 1975 Professor for the older Scandinavian language and literature ( Vigfússon Reader in Ancient Icelandic Literature & Antiquities ) at Linacre College of Oxford University . Turville-Petre was considered one of the most internationally important northernists in his time. In 1973 he was elected a member ( Fellow ) of the British Academy .
Since 1943 he was married to Joan Turville-Petre (1911-2006), who was also active in the field of Scandinavian and Anglo-Saxon literary studies.
