Gabriel of Komana

Gabriel von Komana (real Guido de Vijlder ; born June 13, 1946 in Lokeren , Belgium; † October 26, 2013 in Maastricht , Netherlands) was Archbishop of the Exarchate of Orthodox Congregations of Russian Tradition in Western Europe of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople .

Life

After his conversion from Catholicism in 1974, he was ordained a deacon on October 5, 1975 by Archbishop Georges Tarassoff in the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Paris and a priest on June 27, 1976. From 1977 he served in the parish of St. John Chrysostom in Maastricht . He became archpriest on March 9, 1985. On December 12, 1992, Archbishop Georges Wagner appointed him rector of the parish of St. Alexander Newski in Liège. After he had made his religious vows on May 11, 1994 and accepted the religious name Gabriel, he was appointed abbot on December 10, 1995 and an archimandrite on December 20, 1998 . In January 2001 he was elected auxiliary bishop by the Holy Synod with the title of Archbishop of Komana. He was ordained bishop on June 24, 2001. After the death of Serge Konovalov , Gabriel was entrusted with the management of the archdiocese on May 1, 2003 . After his elevation to the rank of Archbishop two days later, his enthronement took place in the Cathedral of St. Alexander Nevsky in Paris on June 1, 2004. In January 2013, he stepped down for health reasons.

Archbishop Gabriel was a member of the Assembly of Orthodox Bishops of France and Germany and Rector of the Theological Institute of St. Sergius in Paris.
