martyrdom

During the Spanish Civil War, people who were counted on the opposite side were persecuted in both camps. In the republican camp ruled by anarcho-syndicalists and communists , priests and religious were particularly attacked . Therefore the convent of the Visitation Sisters of Madrid decided to leave their convent. However, seven of them remained, among them the prioress, Gabriela de Hinojosa. They hid in a private apartment, but were discovered by neighbors and denounced to the police. They were arrested in the apartment on November 17, 1936 and shot the following night. One of the sisters - Sr. Cecilia Cendoya - managed to escape shortly before the shooting, but surrendered because she could not bear to abandon her fellow sisters. She was shot on November 23, 1936.
