Gabriele Clemens (historian)

Gabriele Clemens (born October 6, 1953 in Aachen ) is a German historian of European history .

Gabriele Clemens studied history and political science at the University of Marburg , where she passed the first state examination for teaching at grammar schools. She also studied German from 1977 to 1979, which was completed with the 1st state examination - extension examination for teaching at grammar schools. In 1981, Clemens was in Marburg in history with a dissertation Catholicism and "national idea" at Martin Spahn doctorate . Clemens was a research assistant from 1981 to 1983 and a university assistant at the University of Paderborn from 1983 to 1991 . Following a Lise Meitner habilitation grant (1992/93), she completed her habilitation in 1994 at the University of Marburg with a thesis on British cultural policy from 1945 to 1949. From 1995 to 1998, Clemens held a substitute professorship at the University of Hamburg . From 1998 until her retirement at the end of the summer semester 2019, Clemens held a Jean Monnet Chair for European Integration History and European Studies at the University of Hamburg. In 1999 she refused a call to the chair for contemporary history at the University of Klagenfurt . In 2011 she was elected a full member of the Academy of Sciences in Hamburg , and in April 2016 a personal member of the Scientific Directorate of the Institute for European Politics (IEP). She has been Deputy Chairwoman of this Board of Directors since October 2018. Clemens was a visiting fellow of the Alcide De Gasperi Research Center at the European University Institute in Florence in 2018/19 .

Her main research interests include Great Britain and the European unification process, the history of the European integration process, the history of Great Britain after 1945, cultural policy, European public relations and European films.
