Gaeru († 166 ) or Kaeru was the fourth king of Baekje , one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea , from 128 to 166 .

origin

He was a son of Giru and took over the throne after the death of his father in his 52nd year of reign. In the Samguk Sagi it was usually precisely defined if it was the oldest or the second oldest son of the previous king. This is not the case with Gaeru and his son Chogo , who inherits him.

Samguk Sagi

The oldest surviving written source on the history of Korea is the Samguk Sagi . His nature is described as sympathetic and upright: "[...] a man of congenial nature, who was also known for his upright comportment." (German: "[...] a man with a sympathetic nature, who was known for his upright behavior.")

In addition to the basic description of Gaeru, there are only five entries about his rule:

  • 131, 4th year
    • Summer, 4th month: The king went hunting near Mount Han.

This was understood as an omen of violence or a drought in the southern part of the empire.

  • 165, 38th year
    • Spring, 1st month: a solar eclipse was observed on the last day of the month.
    • Winter, 10th month: Ajan Gilseon from Silla planned a coup which was exposed and he fled to our country. Sillas König sent a written request to send him back, but this was not followed. King Adalla of Silla then sent an army against Baekje. However, since the soldiers of Baekjes did not face them in the open field and remained in their defensive positions, the army withdrew when their supplies ran out.

The original dating in the Baekje annals of the Samguk Sagi of the two entries was in the year 155. However, since both the solar eclipse and the events with Gilseon took place in the Hou Hanshu and also in the Goryeo annals of the Samguk Sagi 165 and the former also scientifically is proven, this is corrected in modern versions.

  • 166, 39th year
    • The king died.

The period from 137 to 165 is the longest period without an entry in the Silla annals of the Samguk Sagi . It is noticeable that there is such a gap in both Gaeru and the later ruling name-like Gaero. Also with the kings Chogo and Geunchogo there are two large periods of time without an entry. Whether these are two coincidences or connections has not been proven.

death

Gaeru died in 166 and his son Chogo took the throne. His second son Goi became the 8th King of Baekje in 234 after he had deposed the presumably underage King Saban, the eldest son of Gusu.
