Gaius Sempronius Tuditanus (Praetor)

Gaius Sempronius Tuditanus († probably 196 BC) came from the Roman noble family of Sempronians , was praetor and fell in battles against rebellious Spanish peoples.

Life

First, Gaius Sempronius Tuditanus is in the sources for the year 198 BC. Attested as a plebeian aedile ; he held this office together with Marcus Helvius . The two men then achieved 197 BC. The praetur and were charged with the fight against revolting Spanish tribes. This task should be fulfilled by Helvius in Hispania ulterior and Tuditanus in Hispania citerior . Tuditanus had to endure heavy fighting, suffered a devastating defeat against the insurgents as a propaetor the next year and was injured so badly that he succumbed to his wounds. A dating of his pontificate , attested by the Roman historian Titus Livius , is not possible.
