The galactorrhea-amenorrhea syndrome ( English galactorrhea-amenorrhea syndrome) is a collective term for endocrine diseases with disturbance of milk production and lack of menstrual bleeding.
In addition to the postpartum form (after a birth), there is the nonpuerperal form (without a previous birth).
The latter is usually caused by a prolactin- producing tumor of the adenohypophysis , a pituitary adenoma . Rarer causes are:
- Infiltrative processes of the hypothalamus or pituitary stalk
- Medicines, especially psychotropic drugs
- Acromegaly
- Hypothyroidism
Clinical manifestations
Clinical manifestations are:
- Hyperprolactinemia (Forbes-Albright syndrome or Ahumada-DelCastillo syndrome)
- Chiari Frommel Syndrome
