Galaxy (bioinformatics)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Galaxy is a web-based open source - software in the field of bioinformatics for compute-intensive biomedical research. Galaxy is aimed primarily at researchers who have little or no programming experience. The platform was and is being developed by Pennsylvania State University , Emory University, and volunteers worldwide in the Python programming language .

functionality

Galaxy provides so-called "workflows". A workflow describes a task that consists of different steps and can be compared with a cooking recipe . In Galaxy, every work step is a so-called "tool". Workflows usually provide a graphical user interface which assists the user in selecting the appropriate data, the appropriate tools and the correct order of application of these tools. Galaxy is also a platform for data integration of biological data. The platform supports the uploading of data and also processes data from other sources, such as data from the UCSC Genome Browser , BioMart or InterMine . Galaxy supports many different bioinformatics data formats.

Uses

There is a public instance that can be used by everyone and is supported by the Galaxy project. This instance contains a variety of different tools and workflows that have proven useful in the area of genome analysis. In addition to using this server, there is also the option of using many other publicly available instances. These set different priorities, although different tools are preinstalled depending on the server. Since Galaxy is open source, it is also possible to operate a local instance.
