Gall Hoffman

Gall Hoffman also Havemann (* approx. 1565; † 1629 in Lübeck ) was a German printer and writer of the early modern period .

Life

The circumstances of the origin and the early life of Hoffman are not known. He married in Lübeck in 1597. There is evidence of prints from 1594 and 1595 in Magdeburg and from 1600 in Lübeck . Hoffman printed in (high) German and Latin. In a hymn book from 1600 that he printed , he translated some of the songs from Low German and wrote others himself. The Passional (1600) had previously only been printed in Low German in Lübeck . Hoffman's prints are therefore important sources for research into changing writing languages in Lübeck. In November 1600, Elsabe Kröger, the widow of the printer Asswerus Kröger , complained that Hoffman was printing without a license. According to his son Steffen's report, he had to give up the printing trade around 1606. He then worked as a paper and card maker.
