Gallarus Castle ( Irish Caisleán Ghallarais ) is a four-story tower house with a rectangular floor plan in the village of Ballynagall ( Irish Baile na nGall ) in the coastal area of Smerwick Bay in County Kerry, Ireland . It is one of the few remaining fortified buildings on the Dingle Peninsula . The Niederungsburg is about 1 km away from the better known and historically more important Gallarus Oratory .
history
Gallarus Castle was built in the 15th century for the Knight of Kerry , holders of a gentry who belonged to the Geraldine dynasty . Today it is a national monument .
description
The Tower House has been extensively restored and a new, rectangular entrance door has been inserted into the north wall. Below the first floor there are no traces of an entrance staircase (common in tower houses from this period). An internal staircase in the eastern outer wall leads up, and the ceilings on the second and third floors are vaulted . The Tower House is privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside.
