Gallerian ( German  shopping arcade ) is an indoor shopping center in the district of Norrmalm in central Stockholm . Gallerian is located in the commercial center of Stockholm City. The shopping center was opened in 1976. In 2004 Gallerian was inaugurated again after extensive renovations. From 2010 to 2011 the southern part and the basement were rebuilt in several stages. Gallerian was the first major shopping center in downtown Stockholm. Many of the shopping centers built later took on the name Galleria , but in a combination like Kista Galleria or, like a Swedish online seller, shoppingalleria.se . In contrast, Gallerian kept his name in the specific form.

location

The shopping center is located on what used to be Norra Smedjeggatan. It borders the Hamngatan, Regeringsgatan, Jakobsgatan and Malmtorgsgatan - Brunkebergstorg. The main entrance is at Hamngatan 37 . The building is approximately 260 meters long.

history

Norra Smedjegatan 1968

In connection with the Norrmalmsregelingen , the complete reconstruction of Stockholm city center from 1950 to 1970, major changes were implemented. One of the last projects was the expansion and construction of a new district south of the Hamngatan. When the demolition work began, the site on which Gallerian stands today consisted of 45 individual plots. As early as 1929, the Stockholm architect Tage William-Olsson suggested building a covered shopping arcade based on the Italian model. On May 27, 1968, the architect Sune Malmquist presented a sketch that was then developed into the final plan. In the same year, the demolition of the Norra Smedjegatan began. Three different architectural offices were commissioned with the planning: VBB took over the buildings on the Hamngatan side, Boijsen & Efvergren drew the side towards Malmskillnadsgatan and Brunkebergstorg, the southern part on Regeringsgatan was designed by Malmquist & Skoogh. The construction was carried out by several companies, including Ohlsson & Skarne, BIAB and Folke Eriksson.

In 2004 and 2005, Gallerian was extensively rebuilt. The work was carried out in several stages during ongoing operations and interrupted for the Christmas business. The aim of the renovation was to take into account the changed usage requirements of customers and thus secure the future of the shopping center. The architects Wester + Elsner were responsible for the renovation. In 2005 Gallerian had 14 million visitors and employed 750 people. In 2013, 17.9 million visitors were counted and around 1,000 employees were employed. The property is owned by AMF Fastinheter, Sweden's largest real estate company.
