Galo Leoz

Galo Leoz Ortín (born April 22, 1879 in Alcañiz , † January 23, 1990 in Madrid ) was a Spanish ophthalmologist and supercentenarian .

Life

Galo Leoz, born in Alcañiz in Aragon , studied medicine at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid , after which he was a student and collaborator of Santiago Ramón y Cajal . Leoz - he was active until he was 103 years old and treated more than 50,000 patients in total - was professor of ophthalmology at the Medical Faculty of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid.

Galo Leoz held the presidency of the Sociedad Española de Oftalmología, the honorary presidency of the International Neuropsychological Society, based in Washington, DC , and honorary memberships of the British, Italian and German Ophthalmological Societies . In 1972 he was honored with the Medalla de Oro al Mérito en el Trabajo for his life's work.

Galo Leoz - author of numerous scientific papers - was one of the pioneers in research into the degeneration and regeneration of the optic nerves .
